National Science Week - 2017

Celebration of World Science Day and National Science Week - November 10 - 17, 2017.

The Sri Lanka Planetarium will be celebrating the World Science Day and National Science Week 2017 from 10th November to 17th at the planetarium premises. The week starts with a night sky observation camp held throughout the night on 10th November accompanied by Astronomy presentations and workshops. The night camp concludes with the fun and educational activity of water rocket launching. Apart from that there will be a series of Astronomy and Science lectures for the rest of the week.

Our target groups includes under graduates, navy personnel, school teachers, training college students, scouts, Astro IT-Lab members and the general public.

An Astronomy Special Lecture at the Sri Lanka Planetarium

An Astronomy special lecture on “The cradle of young and massive stars” is to be held on 15th July (Saturday) from 6.00 pm to 7.30 pm at the Sri Lanka Planetarium.

This lecture is conducted by Dr. Elena Terlevich who earned her PhD from the University of Cambridge. She has worked at the University of Sussex, Royal Greenwich Observatory and in the Institute of Astronomy Cambridge. Currently she is working at the Institute for Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics (INAOE) in México. She also has published more than 100 papers in international peer reviewed journals that receive more than 4600 citations to date and has supervised several Masters and PhD Theses.

All Astronomy lovers and enthusiasts are welcome.

Monthly Night Sky Observation Camps

A Night Sky Observation Camp on June 30th 2017 :


Sri Lanka Planetarium has organized a night sky observation camp for the viewing pleasure and education of the general public to be held on June 30th 2017. This camp is conducted free of charge and will be held at the Planetarium premises from 7.00 pm to 10.00 pm.

Kindly note that this programme can get cancelled if the sky become cloudy or due to bad weather conditions. Therefore if you wish to participate in this programme please make sure to call the Planetarium on that day after 5.00 pm to one of the following numbers.

Astro Kids

“Astro Kids” Astronomy Program for Little Children :

Applications are called for the second intake of the “Astro Kids” Astronomy program at the Sri Lanka Planetarium. This program is specially designed for little children who are enthusiastic about Astronomy in the age group of 5 to 10 years.

Starting date    : 11.02.2017
Time                 : 10.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon
Venue               : Sri Lanka Planetarium

Applications for this program can be downloaded from here or can be obtained from the Planetarium office.

Duly filled applications should be handed over to the Planetarium office on or before 09.02.2017.
Selected kids will be notified by telephone.

This program will be held free of charge on every Saturday at the above mentioned time. Kindly consider only 20 children is the maximum intake for the program.
