Overview

Vision

To enlighten the population with a broader perspective of the Universe and thereby widening the horizons of astronomical education in Sri Lanka.

Mission

To educate the general public and children on Astronomy using Universal Projector and audio-visual equipment at the Planetarium, conducting night observation camps with telescopes, out-door programs with mobile planetarium, awareness programs and Astronomy courses.

Objectives

Provide up-to-date information on Astronomy to the general public.
Promote Astronomy and Space Science knowledge among school teachers, students and the general public.

History

Established in 1965 by the State Engineering Corporation and declared open on 1st of February, 1965 for Ceylon Industrial Exhibition to introduce the latest technologies specially to show the capability of creating a night sky.

Designed by the former Engineer Dr. A. N. S. Kulasinghe.

Sri Lanka Planetarium is one of the largest Planetariums in the world with a 23m diameter dome with 550 seating capacity.

Our star projector is one of the few functioning Universal Projectors in the world.

Installed the Digital Power Dome Projector system in 2014 to present Full-Dome movies.
